littleBits is a constructor kit that helps kids create their own toys. Like Lego building blocks little circuits easily snap together with magnets to make anything that can be imagined – making things come to life that can light up, move, twist, and buzz.
Kids (and adult kids) can become inventors and build prototypes without having to solder, wire or understand the intricacies of programming. Each littleBits component has a function that has been preset, may it be proximity sensing, switching, dimming or light response, the circuits than connect together to perform the invented task.
One community project shows a cardboard character (Bristol Bot) that uses a connected power source, dimmer, wire and vibration motor. Once assembled the character scoots around on a vibration motor like a robot toy you would normally get at the local toy store. Watch the video below to see it in action. A littleBits starter kit comes with 11 pieces for $89, with additional components available for $10.
Little kid inventors is an expanding industry, giving youth the chance to create things that light up, shake, blink, bend, twist, turn, push and buzz. The company also plans to introduce Bluetooth and wireless solutions in the future giving kids tools to build in simple ways never before realized. The brilliant video below nicely shares what littleBits can do and what you can do with littleBits.
