Based out of Pittsburgh, the Conflict Kitchen is a take-out dining spot that serves cuisines from nations that are in conflict with the U.S. The founders, Jon Rubin, Dawn Weleski and John Pena, have found a unique opportunity to teach those within Pittsburgh about the conflicts their nation is tied up with through out the world, while at the same time providing savory and mouth watering foods from these countries.
The take-out junction is not only a functional place to obtain your food, as like any other out the window food-grab location, but it serves the dual purpose of becoming an art installation. The vibrant display and installation serves as a prominent fixture against the bland concrete facade’s that encompass the other retailers and food outlets in the neighborhood.
“Conflict Kitchen is a take-out restaurant that only serves cuisine from countries that the United States is in conflict with. The food is served out of a take-out style storefront, which will rotate identities every four months to highlight another country. Each Conflict Kitchen iteration is augmented by events, performances, and discussion about the culture, politics, and issues at stake with each country we focus on.”
With food being the main playground, the true intention of Conflict Kitchen is to open dialogue about the state of the conflicts and work for conversation about the nations the U.S. is in dispute with.
