There are bike helmets, and then there’s the Hövding. Essentially an airbag for your head, the stylish Swedish design by Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin isn’t a product you should just giggle at when hearing the term “airbag for your head.”
Housed inside a stylish scarf, the safety guards of this bike helmet combust out when you crash and surrounds the globe that sits atop your personal frame. The collar or scarf contains the air bag itself, helium to inflate the bag, and sensors to ensure the Hövding fires at the right moment.
The sensors are the highest of technology excellence with gyroscopes and accelerometers, which pass data on the movements of the monitor. All the monitoring and constant engagement with sensors ensures the deployment of the airbag when in danger. But the helmet only comes to life if zipped up. Acting as a power switch the zipping action ensures deployment only when around your neck in not during unexpected and unnecessary times.
Beyond the pain of how a traditional bike helmet looks, it’s expected destruction of your personally quaffed hair, and the inability to find a suitable hat to get underneath, the reasons to not wear a helmet sound more like excuses. But in reality people really do want to take care of their melons when cycling. The Hövding is the invisible solution that answers every possible excuse and is a technology marvel that does what’s expected in a helmet – save lives.
But why choose this helmet over any other? Style probably the answer that comes to mind first. With each scarf having the ability to be changed in design it allows anyone to look the part they choose easily. It’s also not a helmet that can affect vision from a drooping helmet and the Hövding will adapt. Once connected via USB, diagnostic information on your “chiefs” can be saved, while a “black-box” of sorts keeps information on the last ten-seconds of sensor information which all helps in the improvement of software performance.
