ENVELOP is a 3D sound platform that is creating a space in San Francisco for live electronic music, DJ sets and educational workshops.
The team at ENVELOP is creating a next-generation 28.4 channel speaker audiovisual system built to enhance the audience and artist experience through 3D sound, visuals, and open source management tools that can be adjusted to fit the creative thinking of the user. The space will be primarily used for music and education and already has the backing of Tycho, a popular electronic and ambient music band based in San Francisco.
We are used to listening to music and sound in stereo (two speakers) but with ENVELOP’s platform the audience will hear sound from above, below, in front of, behind, and completely around them. A video projection system and LED lights will also be embedded into the speaker columns. These will be able to be synchronized with the audio to create a total sound and visual experience.
A 3 year lease on the space already been secured and the creators hope that this 3D audio and visual experience will grow beyond San Francisco. ENVELOP isn’t just meant to be a performance platform, but a place to inspire new ideas and development through research and studio production.
The ENVELOP team consists of:
Andrew Kimpel – An electrical/software engineer and product architect with 30 years experience in embedded software development and DSP algorithm design, and 15 years experience in the fields of audio engineering, acoustics, psychoacoustics, and spatial audio.
Christopher Willits – A composer, producer, photographer, filmmaker, graduate school teacher, touring electronic musician, and guitar pioneer.
Elan Rosenman – A pioneer in exploring different applications for spatial audio and Ambisonics, including physical healing, personal development, and neuro-acoustic science.
Roddy Lindsay – A software engineer and entrepreneur, most recently as founder and CEO of WineGlass, a mobile application.
The project has already received enough backing to acquire the core technology needed for the ENVELOP system, but further funds are needed to install and integrate this technology.
