Finding quality employees is not only time-consuming, but the time and expense that the HR department undertakes can be overwhelming.
Think of the steps involved- starting with advertising to recruit a decent pool of candidates- to the training expense when hiring new employees. Now, consider your employee turnover rate with that cost going down the drain.
With that in mind, it only makes sense that you want to keep your best employees happy and retained as long as possible. If you’ve had one of your key employees leave your business, then more than likely you understand the punch to the gut your business takes.
Suddenly, you notice production is down along with overall chaos taking over that you struggle to calm. And, employee roles become more complicated. While it may be painful to hear, but, you as the business owner may be playing a significant role in these resignations.
There is always room for improvement in every position of a company. You too may be doing things that are contributing to your leading employees putting in two-week notice.
The following are examples of steps you could be taking that make taking a job elsewhere a pleasant relief.
Make sure you Recognize Top talent
If your top talent are hustling and putting in the effort and the hours on a consistent basis, it’s your job to make sure they feel recognized. The worst mistake is when you put all employees in the same category.
Patting the workers on the back that aren’t quite up to par by giving the same bonuses and perks as the good employees tend to build resentment over time.
“ Your best employees will begin to feel unappreciated if it appears their loyalty and hard work goes unnoticed.” according to Jason Anderson HR Director of phoenixNAP.
When you have unhappy employees, morale will sink. By continuing to allow poor work ethic to filter through your company, you will eventually drive away people who seek a rewarding work environment.
Do not Let Valuable Employees Head to a Dead-End
Motivated employees are hard working individuals aiming for more prominent roles within a company.
If other less qualified employees block the path that leads to a more significant position in your business, they likely will seek employment elsewhere.
Failure to recognize them for good performance, or more responsibilities without more benefits for their hard work is a fantastic way to entice them to find a better job elsewhere. You can’t leave good employees in the same position forever. These employees have more drive to prosper and climb that ladder of success.
It’s your job to make sure they know you have plans and the same goals for their future at your company. Not only are you helping them feel more secure about their future, but you are also signaling to them that you appreciate their hard work and dedication.
Do Not Practicing ANY Discriminatory Business Practices
One sure way to have your good employees pack up and leave the playground is if you engage in any discrimination whatsoever. Women and minorities are usually the ones that get the lower paying jobs over a male even if she is the more qualified of the two.
Another way minorities have discrimination shoved in their face is by paying them less than a male employee. While there are laws to protect employees against discrimination, most opt out of this decision and instead leave their current job and find better elsewhere.
There are cases where discrimination is not on purpose. The best way to ensure against this is to check the difference between one group vs. another. If you do by chance find a discrepancy, try to make the corrections. If you chose not to you just may lose your good employee to a more “minority-friendly” business.
Quality Staff Seek a Challenging Environment
Good quality employees aren’t going to be comfortable with boredom and stagnant jobs. If they come to work every day with the expectations of doing the same thing day after day, they will lack the enthusiasm it takes to make them want to stay.
A good employee wants and need their brain challenged. They want to learn more and produce more so that they feel as though they have accomplished something. Find ways to inspire your staff. Make them dig deeper each day to learn more and make them feel as though you are putting their skills to the test.
Placing Too Many Restrictions on Your Employees
Let’s face it; no grown-up wants to go to a job every day where they feel like they are in prison. If you have a way too strict dress code or overly strict punishments, you will lose employees at lightning speeds.
Of course, all workplaces have rules and regulations to follow, but, don’t make it feel like Alcatraz. If your staff is feeling like one wrong move will land them in detention, they will search for freedom elsewhere.
It’s essential that the rules you put in place won’t dampen your employee’ passions about their work. It won’t take long before that employee begins to feel caged in and need a release. If you are consistently shooting down their ideas, there may be a problem.
Allow your good employees to engage in projects they feel is best for the company. Keep your authority at a distance until you see where their ideas can lead. Step in when necessary, just not in a forceful or demeaning manner.
Happy Employees Lead to a Profitable Successful Company
Try to remember who you were before you became the CEO or Manager at your business. There was a time where you had a boss that dictated to you how you performed and how your position contributed to his business.
Was their attitude healthy? Did they make you feel less than who you are? We’re the women treated with respect and as equals on the corporate ladder?
These type questions are the same you should ask yourself about your employees.
All people want out of their job is respect. If you want your company to succeed, you need quality employees. But, great employees aren’t indebted to you. They can and will seek greener pastures if and when they feel like they need a change.
If you are promoting an unfair and stressful work environment, you will lose your most valued employees. Take a look into your company and talk to your employees to get a feel of the areas than need improvement.
Let your staff know you appreciate them.
