We are all going through some sort of hardship ever since the COVID-19 hit the globe. You might be worrying about how to keep your business afloat. Having sleepless nights about your bills. Or in daily stress, because you’re now working from home with screaming kids in the background. They say you come back stronger after hardship. Now more than ever, we all want that.
The way I see it is, resilience is not something you are born with or not. It’s something that is cultivated. It is cultivated during hardship by adjusting and handling a situation and how well you come out of it.
You can never fully prepare, but you can adopt different mindsets and traits to add to your resilience. Keep reading to find out what they are.
Mind of steel
Just like a body in a good physical condition is less susceptible to the flu, good mental health makes you less susceptible to stress. Therefore I’m a strong believer in personal growth. Feed your mind with rich, valuable information. Make strong neuro connections that help you solve problems.
Get enough sleep. We need around 8 hours of sleep per day. That’s quite a lot in a 24 hour day. Nature made us that way. Amongst others, good sleep helps process information, rejuvenates the body and its organs, and increases concentration and alertness when we’re awake.
I find it also helps to keep a gratitude journal. Focusing on the things you are grateful for helps you to stay in a positive frame of mind. You see, problems have never been solved when you’re in doom and gloom.
Emote
Trying to stay in a positive frame of mind is a necessity when solving problems optimally. However, that doesn’t mean you have to stuff your emotions down. It’s very natural to feel a wide range of emotions when you’re in discomfort.
Find someone to whom you can vent and emote to. Not only is it good to release, but you may find that through venting, you’re able to move through what is bothering you much quicker. Make sure this person is not someone from your direct circle but external and neutral so they can optimally guide you without projecting or pushing their own agenda.
Adjust your course
Just because something bad has happened, that doesn’t mean you have to give up. There might be a mountain standing in your way, but that doesn’t mean your journey ends there. There is always an alternative route to take. You can go around the mountain. Through it or over it. Make small adjustments, but whatever you do, don’t quit.
Focus on a brighter future
The cool thing is people, in general, are very adaptive. Just look at the different hardships we’ve already encountered. Natural disasters, disease, and viruses, even wars. Staying hopeful, taking positive action, and focusing on brighter futures got us through those hardships. That is why we’re still here today. Take the time to create, if you haven’t already, or re-create your vision. Get excited about your future because it’s that which is going to encourage you to keep ongoing.
