Many years ago a company called Snailmailme.com was founded, their goal was to change the mailing industry by making it simpler, easier and in the form of a web application. Sadly, that startup began to fizzle away and a new generation of technology to post mail applications have become available that are not only more seamless, interactive and usable but also can be done on the go. Apple recently announced the launch of Cards – a simple way for you to send a folded letterpress card from your iPhone or iPod Touch.
Using mail might be retro, but there’s still something comforting and exciting about receiving a tangible, hand crafted and personalized message from friends and family. Simply snap a photo with your iPhone or iPod Touch, pick from one of the 21 pre-made layouts, type out your message and select contacts form your address book and your done. Apple will then ship your postcard worldwide for $2.99 domestically and $4.99 internationally.
As a co-founder of Snailmailme.com it’s exciting to see how this idea has blossomed into an Apple based business. There will always be a place for post mail services, even if it may not be used as frequently as before. Mail may be slower in our technologically advanced society, but the warmth and cheerful feeling one gets from receiving a letter press card is very hard to replicate in any other medium. Check out some of the designs offered by Apple, they are actually pretty artistic.
Note (Feb. 2014): Apple has discontinued this service and suggests iPhoto instead.
