Imagine you’re at a local startup event, people are mingling, drinks are flowing and music is pumping … wait “is that Nickelback? Ewww”. Anthm is a newly launched free social music app on the App Store. Powered by the streaming music service Rdio, Anthm allows people to create or join location-based parties, which they can use to control the music being played in their location.
Instead of letting just one person control the music at a party, the app lets those in the same location tap into a modern-day jukebox so friends can add music into one playlist. By utilizing the Rdio library, the app lets users select from 12 million songs available on-demand from Rdio. Once users add music to a playlist, others in the party can then vote it up the queue – and allow the most requested songs to be played first.
“Musical democracy is our way of giving people control over the music they hear in public places,” says Ben Myers, co-founder of Anthm. “Today’s technologies are too powerful for people to be listening to songs they don’t like. Anthm finally puts people in control of the music.”
Founded by Ben Myers and Paul Thorsteinson, Anthm is a fun social way to get friends involved to discover and share new music, and prevent 12 straight Nickelback tracks from playing back-to-back. (We apologize to all Nickelback fans).
