In May 2015, founder Dave Brown had the vision for Droners.io after receiving some drone footage of himself kiteboarding.
“Friends on my facebook would ask if someone in a helicopter took the photo of me kitesurfing. They were absolutely blown away by it and so was I. I knew it was something that the everyday person would love to have access to, whether it be to film their wedding, the house they are trying to sell, or a surf session. Just a few weeks since it’s launch, Droners.io already has over 700 pilot sign-up’s and they are watching that number continually climb. The Droners.io marketplace provides a unique opportunity for pilots to gain exposure and grow their business. What sets them apart from the few existing drone pilot marketplaces is that Droners.io connects pilots directly with users needing a large variety of services, while competitors focus mainly on real estate and construction. The most popular services so far have been weddings and real estate, including lots of very original/interesting ways to use a drone.
To become an approved pilot, the pilot must have obtained a FAA 333 exemption which allows the pilot to legally operate a UAV for commercial use. With a solid pilot base in hand, Droners.io is now focusing on marketing efforts to increase consumer exposure and drive more jobs to their pilots. Droners.io is also rolling out new features weekly and is currently working on a pinterest-like pilot search that will allow clients to hire a pilot by browsing video galleries. If a user finds a video they love, they will easily be able to send the pilot a job request directly from the video.
