Here’s a very clever subscription startup that really left us amazed. A creation of Kickstarter’s Perry Chen and others, Dollar a Day asks to donate just $30 a month to support nonprofits that do great humanitarian work.
Each day, like we do for startups, Dollar a Day features a nonprofit that is making incredible strides from around the world. And anyone that signs up to the subscription automatically donates a dollar to that nonprofit. Together, all subscription members make a significant difference in the lives of the less fortunate.
Along with a posting on their site, the project sends out an email detailing the nonprofit that will be supported letting everyone be more aware of incredible organizations to be more engaged in the sector. Similarly to New-Startups.com Dollar a Day is about discovery, it’s not easy finding about nonprofits with so many out there, but with the postings and encouragement of a unique method to attain donations the site brings awareness which not only will help financially but will also bring people-power to increase volunteerism.
Nonprofits are selected by their innovation and high impact. It’s expected they will have responsible track records in six key areas: Education, Health, Economic Development, Arts & Culture, Environment, and Human Rights. The site goes on to tell:
“We look for organizations that pursue innovative solutions to problems in their fields, such as pushing the envelope with cutting edge research, designing new methods to solve problems more efficiently, or identifying and tackling underrepresented issues. We look for high impact organizations that work with the communities they serve to implement long-lasting solutions, as well as those that address root causes rather than only individual symptoms. We look for organizations that have a meaningful impact on society, like art and cultural institutions, as well as a measurable one — deeply affecting people’s lives or successfully helping a large constituency. Depending on the age, size, and approach of each nonprofit, they may exhibit one or more of these qualities.”
All donations are tax deductible and you can join the 499 others (this number is growing rapidly) that already have joined at just $30 a month.
