Let’s meet Startup, Eighty Nine Robotics:
Website: http://www.eightyninerobotics.com
In a few sentences, tell us what your start-up is all about!:
We make Rook, the world’s first fly-from-anywhere indoor drone. Rook connects to the Internet and streams video/controls from your phone. This means that Rook can be used as a flying security camera, a smarthome suite add-on, a remote tourism/real estate device, and more.
Rook is our flagship product. As a robotics electronics/software startup, we hope to ship more awesome things that delight customers in the coming years.
When was your startup founded? And what stage is your startup currently at?:
2015
Who are your competitors? And what is your start-up’s competitive advantage over them?:
World’s first fly-from-anywhere indoor drone.
Let us know a bit about your team, who are the key team members and what is their role?:
Jackie is a Master in Robotics with well-rounded work experience in consulting, marketing, and finance. He is currently in Shenzhen, China for manufacturing.
Spencer studies Computer Engineering and was the chief leader of competitive solar car, rocketry, and robotics teams. He’s built many robots, electrical systems, and flying machines from scratch.
Matt has a Computer Science background and loves hacking projects on weekends. Along with his previous job at an embedded camera startup, Matt also has experience growing up in Palo Alto and Singaporean military service.
Why did you choose this particular idea and concept to build your start-up on?:
Existing fixed cameras or telepresence solutions don’t have the mobility that a flying camera drone does. If something is out of range or out of focus, you’re out of luck. Rook solves this by streaming video through the cloud, right to your phone, with easy tap-and-swipe controls on iOS/Android apps to make controlling a cinch.
