Remember when sharing your hand made mixtape was the thing to do? Grabbing your cassette recorder, flipping it over – recording on the other side and then sharing it with friends and family? Well, those days are surely over – for one cassette’s are long gone, but the time it takes to filter and burn your iTunes track lists to hand a tangible item for sharing seems even more outdated.
Herd.fm is a new iPhone app looking to make discovering and sharing music easier, simpler and once again fun. Imagine listening to your favorite play list on your mobile phone and you decide you want to share your list with someone else on their phone – what would you do? Herd.fm makes it possible for you to beam over a 5 song mixtape in a few seconds. As simple as texting, you’ll be able to send “mini-mixes” to friends and track how far your playlists gets shared with what they are calling “Trak Journey”.
Trak Journey is another feature within the app to visualize your musical influence. So when you share a song from the app, Herd.fm will display a map showing where your song travels and who is listening to it across the world.
The app also comes with a recommendation engine that is an add-on to the Last.fm API by scanning what you listen to on iTunes and what you share on Facebook and Twitter to help you discover new and popular music that fits your taste. Every time you share a song or mini-mix to a friend, Facebook or Twitter through Herd.fm, you’re awarded an instant music recommendation to your iPhone. The app is also integrated with the SoundCloud and YouTube APIs to make the music listening and discovery experience hassle-free by not having to ever leave the app to get more music.
“For our new direction we took a hard look at the big picture of sharing and discovering music on your mobile device and how we could solve this problem,” says David Nam, newly appointed Herd.fm executive team member, formerly of MXP4 and Last.fm. “Other sharing and discovery services were clearly invented for the web browser and not fundamentally designed for a mobile device. In the new app, we’ve taken this completely broken experience and created a legit mobile solution that makes it easy, fast, convenient and fun to discover new music by doing what you already do — share the music you love with the ones you love.”
Tailoring music for sharing and discovery on mobile devices makes it convenient, fun and easy. Get it at the app store now and see how your music can travel.
