In a few sentences, tell us what your start-up is all about!:
Inspired by a love of art, geometry and mid-century style, Modjewel handbags were designed with the modern woman in mind. Simply add and swap various modules such as Covers, Clasps and Straps to a hard-shell box clutch (Bare Bag) to create true pieces of wearable art that can adapt from a casual brunch to a cocktail party.
Before launching Modjewel, we spent two years collaborating with top-tier industrial designers and engineers to perfect our handbag system— the end result is a handbag crafted to the same high standards as designer brands, but that is completely customizable, changeable and sustainable.
Modjewel’s patent-pending Clasp and Shell mechanisms allow for a completely versatile appearance. Thanks to shielded internal magnets (engineered not to interfere with credit cards), changing the exterior of your Modjewel bag is as simple as removing the Shell, wrapping around a new Cover and placing it back on the Bare Bag. Clasps, the jewel of the bag, can also be released and swapped out with the simple click of a button.
This is how it works: start with our Bare Bag and dress it up with your favorite genuine Leather Covers, add a Clasp-jewel for some sparkle and complete your look with a Strap! Once you own a Bare Bag, you can simply shop for additional modules to attain a whole new look without having to purchase another bag.
Our products are designed by women for women. We believe in releasing very few products that are well thought out and meticulously crafted so that women can create a Modjewel Clutch that suits their own unique style.

Let us know a bit about your team, who are the key team members and what is their role?:
Eliana Ghantous – Founder/CEO
Eliana has a background in Materials Engineering and she left the Chemistry lab on a quest to develop handbags with reusable bases for minimal waste.
Sami Ghantous – Founder/COO
Sami has a background in Mechanical Engineering and Power plants and he oversees all of the operations for Modjewel.
Why did you choose this particular idea and concept to build your start-up on?:
I have always felt that the ever-changing fashion trends throughout different seasons was a bit excessive and I wanted to create a line of sustainable handbags that have minimal waste. I also felt that current handbags limited my options and ability to create an outfit or look I truly loved and my growing collection of clutches and minaudières were a challenge to store or pack.
I just wanted to own a single bag that had the ability to be styled in different ways, something that would be easy to store and fun to wear. This inspired me to create a new handbag system that would better suit the modern woman’s lifestyle.
Do you have any customer feedback on your product and/or service that you could share?:
We have a small customer base who really love the concept of sustainability through living minimally. They love that they can attain a whole new look by simply purchasing a new Cover instead of having to purchase a whole new bag. Our customers also find our bags very convenient for traveling since you can simply bring additional modules and be able to store more options in a small amount of space.

Finally, do you have any other comments or information about your product that you would like to add?:
Modjewel handbags are also functional. The Bare Bag accommodates a woman’s daily essentials and its vegan leather interior features a center divider with room for cash and credit cards, while side pockets can store lipstick and other small items.
In addition to its organized interior, Modjewel’s packaging system offers additional functionality. The reusable Smart Pouches neatly organize all the modules while allowing components to be visible for easy browsing. The end result is a handbag crafted to the same high standards as designer brands, but that is completely customizable, changeable and sustainable.
Modjewel’s first collection—“Facets”—features seven genuine leather Covers, eight Clasp designs and four shoulder Straps that have all been designed to be mixed and matched. Clasps incorporate acrylic and silvertone hardware for a modern look, while Covers and Straps incorporate classic tones and high-quality cowhide leather. The collection also features an exclusive Gemstone Leather Cover which was born through a collaboration with Australian watercolor designer, Louise Jones.
